Setting

Map of the region

The fantasy/medieval kingdom of Durkin, and its capital, Camlin.

For generations, Durkin has been a stable monarchy. Some jostling for influence among its various city-states has occurred, but some form of rational diplomacy has always won out over large scale armed conflict.

Character Creation Guidelines

You are an experienced professional in the prime of your career. That career might be as a hardened mercenary deployed repeatedly against the ever-fecund orc tribes in the foothills of the Ozgarn Mountains, or it might be something more genteel, like a polyglot who works as a translator of rare tomes in the royal library of Camlin, or a wealthy entrepreneur of Argyle who owns several profitable high-end brothels.

The make-up of the party will determine the flavor of the campaign. Every character will be expected to roleplay, and every character will have a chance to shine.

Before building out your character, write up a brief physical description and background that answers at least these questions:

  • what's your name?
  • where are you from?
  • what's your profession?
  • how did you get so good at it?

You might explore some previous characters of this world for ideas and connections.

As there are primarily only humans native around Camlin, if you desire to be another race, the following templates and additional costs apply:

  • Elf: 10 pt unusual background
  • Dwarf: 10 pt unusual background
  • Half-elf: 5 pt unusual background
  • Half-orc: 5 pt unusual background

Regardless of your race, origin, and backstory, there must be a reason that the kingdom would call upon your services. All party members will have an implied Sense of Duty: you are patriots. Perhaps not fanatics or zealots, but you value the notions of societal order and justice, and respect the monarchy.

You needn't be physically powerful or fit, but you must be capable of travel and communication.

For experienced players building their own characters

Basic point limits:

  • 120 points available for attributes, advantages, and skills.
  • -25 points maximum in Disadvantages
  • -5 points available for optional Quirks

Encouraged additional points for social/societal traits that connect you to NPCs in the world:

  • Up to 20 Extra points available for Advantages such as Social Regard, Reputation, Status, Contacts, Allies, Patrons, etc.

offset by...

  • Up to -20 Extra points available for Disadvantages such as Enemies, Duties, Debts, Secrets, Dependents, Vows, etc.

Your total should not exceed 120.

Anything Exotic (alien icon) or Supernatural (lightning icon) will require GM approval and an additional expenditure on Unusual Background. Generally speaking, if the desired attribute is allowed, expect to spend at least that much again on a written Unusual Background that explains it. Magery is the exception, which will be allowed at the usual cost.
