Family bodyguard Jarod Goldschmidt told the party in the Ur campaign that Rudolph fell in combat with bandits in the Forgotten Hills.

Father Rudolph was a swashbuckling hero, a 'special forces' operative employed by various mysterious and noble causes, finally coming to sit on the Council of Lords in Heidelberg when he was 39. Three years later, when Caroline was 16, he went on a mission to unknown destinations defined by the Emerald Emir. That was 6 years ago.
