Background

Recent

For the past several years, Martigan has been the life of the party at "Finney's Pub 'n Grub", a tavern in a rural village, living off his modest military pension and the proceeds of the sale of his farm.

Professional Background

Twenty-six years ago, the teenager left home and joined the royal navy, soon displaying a skill with fencing weapons. Four years later, he was assigned to an elite task force assigned to prevent or disrupt pirate attacks on merchant vessels.

Ten years later, he was leading the task force, and had begun actively hunting pirates and bringing them to justice - one way or another. He turned down numerous lucrative private bounty hunting offers, preferring instead to serve the common good and those who could not defend themselves. Soon, even the whispered name 'Martigan Swift' struck fear in the dark hearts of those would attack legitimate merchants on the high seas.

Some of those dark hearts paid to have him assassinated; Martigan slew the assassins.

Retirement & Return

Six years ago, he retired and settled down to raise a family with his beloved Miriam on a quaint farm in the country. Tragically, childbirth complications ended the lives of Miriam and their new daughter. In despair he sold the farm and moved into town to distract himself with frivolous merriment. He spends most days and nights entertaining the locals over round after round of fine whiskey.

Over these past few years the requests from his old navy colleagues and private parties have become less frequent, and now the people of his past speak his name with a sigh and downward glance, "Martigan Swift, yeah, it's a shame, he's a mess."

A month ago, a young woman came in Finney's Pub 'N Grub who bore a remarkable resemblance to Miriam. Martigan was blind drunk at the time, but did his best to woo her. She spurned his advances, and called him "grandpa".

Stunned, Martigan reviewed his life.

His 'Fit' advantage had evaporated; he'd accumulated the 'Alcoholism' disadvantage.

No longer an always-ready soldier, his 'Combat Reflexes' advantage was tarnished with a Limitation (Only When Outnumbered).

The next day, he opened up with polished cherrywood box containing his favored rapier (of Very Fine quality) and remembered what life once was.

He has continued to be the life of the party at Finney's, but now he does so with his rapier on his belt, a new sparkle in his eye, and a renewed sense of self-respect and clarity.

He feels as though he is ready for the next chapter of his glorious life.
