In the Into The Black campaign, Dr. Maximillius Alphonso is a brilliant and famous mathematician, space drive engineer and theoretical physicist employed by the UN.
Around 2400, he published a research paper concluding that it was possible to "fold" spacetime and skip huge distances, thereby rendering the speed of light limitation irrelevant. He was largely ridiculed in professional circles, but he continued his research, and was well funded by the UN (but over the years offered far higher salary and bonuses by Zettacorp).
He eventually relocated his studies to GD-66b and discovered the species known as the xiph, giving it the scientific name Xiphosura Maximillius, in honor of his scientist uncle (after whom he was named).
Deceased under high-acceleration, buried on Alphonso Alpha.
