Background

Born in the 1830s to a single mother working as a saloon girl in Arkansas Territory, Harlan was scarcely missed when he ran away with a two-bit carnival when he was twelve. He spent his teenage years hauling gear and fighting the other carnies as the group traveled from frontier town to frontier town over the years.

In his twenties he worked for a few years as a union enforcer for a railroad company and heard everyone talking about the western frontier. When he was fired for excessive violence, he wandered westward and worked as muscle for a variety of semi-criminal organizations before hooking up with Qwade Gang.
